The down economy has created a prolonged real estate slump (a cyclical result… the real estate crash was the primary cause of the economic downturn in the first place), slow retail sales, job losses, and an overall lack of confidence in our government, the stock market and especially our financial institutions. However, I didn’t realize just how far-reaching the problems were until I saw this video.

The moral of the story: Diversification! Mr. Monopoly placed all of his investment capital into the real estate basket. He should have had a much more diverse portfolio, including talking to a commodity broker about some alternative investments. You would think that someone who has been around as long as Mr. Monopoly would have learned this lesson by now.

Secrets of the Millionaire Mind

There are a lot of promises about Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, and you might start out feeling skeptical about this book’s ability to deliver on them – I know I did. T. Harv Eker claims that in just five minutes, he can predict your financial future for a lifetime! However, if you pay more attention to the book and what it has to say, it could make a huge difference in your opinion.

You see, all of us have certain attitudes about money and success that either hold us back or allow us to go forward. That’s the biggest thing that Secrets of the Millionaire Mind has to teach us. Every one of us has picked up a personal money blueprint that determines how we behave towards money and how our financial stories progress.

This means that even with the knowledge I have about stocks, finances, alternative investments, sales, marketing and real estate, without the right money blueprint, it will be almost impossible to succeed. The good news is that each and every one of us can consciously hange our internal money blueprint to an attitude that can make us much more successful. That’s what Secrets of the Millionaire Mind can do for us – teach us to fix our internal blueprints.

We’ve all been trained from childhood to either be poor or rich, and most of us have the life-long programming that keeps us from reaching our potential. On the other hand, I recently managed to make a big change in how I think about money, and you can, too. In order to be a millionaire, you first have to think like one; then the opportunities will present themselves and you’ll be in the right frame of mind to take advantage of them.

This book spends a great deal of time talking about our financial blueprint, telling us what we believe and feel about money/wealth and why. However, you shouldn’t worry that the blueprint metaphor gets in the way of the real message. It can be hard to see what’s keeping us back, and checking out Secrets of the Millionaire Mind can be a big help.

This process might take longer and seem slower than you want, but each time you open up the book, changes are really taking place. You’ll actually begin getting results, even though the journey to success takes quite a bit longer. This really is million dollar advice, but fortunately, it doesn’t cost that much. )

Should you see what Secrets of the Millionaire Mind has to offer you? That depends – after all, there are a few people out there that this book doesn’t work for. If you don’t want to deal with the uncomfortable process of changing your mind and finding new ways to think about money, avoid this book and look for a program that doesn’t take that kind of dedication.

If you have the determination to succeed, however, this book really is for you. You won’t spend your time going through lots of positive affirmation, and some of the things you’ll learn might actually be fairly uncomfortable. However, you’ll know that they’re true as soon as you hear them.

If I could change my mind about the way finances work, you can too, and the perfect way to do it could be through Secrets of the Millionaire Mind. Check this book out, see what it can offer you, and soon your future will be so bright, you’ll have to wear sunglasses.

Owing to the present economic recession, various lending agencies, some government-sponsored and some private agree that have been flooded with queries and demand for loan modifications by the general public. With this, all the real estate agents, lawyers, mortgage agents, lenders and the like are expected to be on their toes now. This is on account of increasing foreclosure reliefs and bailout offers from the government as well as the loaning institutions. Mortgage modifications have gathered momentum of late, as a contingency measure to pre-empt foreclosure, auction or total bankruptcy.

The modification loan seekers should not act hastily but first find out all the pros and cons of the viability of the modification loan, in order to infer if the loan will truly salvage their pride and pull them out of their financial crisis. A mortgage modification is an improvement over the home loan, is given once the nod of the existing lender is obtained, and modifies the conditions in the current loan to make it more affordable to the borrower. Loan modifications are also known to fill the gaps in the missed payments, increasing the repayment period or reduction in principal, but they are far and few in between.

People should not confuse mortgage modification with refinance loan, which is a new loan normally taken to wipe off the previous loan. Hence it is not meant for those who are regular with their payments are have other assets to fall back in times of crisis, or even those who interest rate is so low that it cannot be reduced any further. It is best suited for those who are on the brink of financial collapse and can in no way honor their current loan commitments.

Before going in for modification loan, check the credentials of the loan modifier. Verify his track record for black spots or tarnishes. Acquaint yourself with all the rules federal or state, in this area. If in doubt, consult a professional, satisfy yourself and only then sign on the dotted line.

The current investing climate is absolutely the most atrocious that most investment professionals and amateurs have experiences in their lives. Stocks have been battered down by record amounts and other investments such as commodities and bonds have suffered due to the new risk of default present in once solid companies and the lack of demand due to the very poor economic environment. Short selling is the usual way to profit from declining stock prices but for most people there are two reasons they shy away from this approach. The first reason is that shorting is potentially riskier than going long a stock and is also more complicated and so for the amateur this is typically a bad option. Also, many professionals believe a snap back rally will occur making it risky to be short.

The only other approach to profiting is to invest in alternative investments such as commodity futures for select items that are recession proof and via forex trading. Funds that are employing these strategies although still often having been battered down are still faring much better than those funds that are predominantly invested in stocks. Given the volatility of the current markets you should examine your own portfolio and consider options for diversifying and hedging against the current downturn by employing some alternative investments with a portion of your invest-able dollars.

It is very tough to be an investor these days. Unfortunately, most of us are investors. If you hold any stocks, mutual funds, or retirement accounts you are an investor. If you have placed money in any sort of futures or other commodities you are an investor, and if you hold currency in countries other than your own then you are a form of investor. Given this, we should all have at least some interest in how to invest and how current investments are doing in terms of performance.

The problem is the number of asset classes in decline right now is unprecedented, and so even the experts are having a hard time indicating where people should put their money. With a wide-ranging global contraction in process many asset classes are suffering tremendous secular declines. That being the case, though, there still are asset classes and alternative investments that can do well.

With many commodities having their prices driven down due to contracting demand you have to be careful which ones you pick if that is how you want to invest. Certain precious metals should do well as people become increasingly nervous about paper currencies and so an opportunity may exist there. Forex trading opportunities may also exist where one country appears better positioned in the recession that the others. Despite the grim news if you position your portfolio correctly you can weather the downturn.

The author Walter Peters, vide this write-up tells us the kind of precautions or step that would be discrete on our part to take before indulging in forex trading system. It should prove immensely useful to all those who have still not gained enough experience in the field and any valuable inputs that come their way or those who are contemplating alternative investments and would seriously like to consider giving forex trading a try.

The author vouches by the fact that there is one particular that should be patented without a second thought, where forex trading is concerned, which has time and again yielded results to the veterans in the field, and that would be backtesting. Any successful business would concur that it is the past experience that goes a long way in not only ensuring success in future , but also avoid all such blunders, that led to unsavory results in the past. Many people involved in some sort of money making business would emphatically agree that the past records and feedback are the best teachers for the future trades and enable you to stay away from impulsive decisions and plunging head-on without a second thought.

The author, here too, comes with some genuine, tested and tried methods to fall back on for the benefit of the beginners and not-so-experienced ones in the field. He cites the examples of manual verification, using readily available software, or creating one’s one program to carry out backtesting, explaining briefly the merits and demerits of each system. Ultimately, he eulogizes the importance of backtesting by all those who indulge in forex trading systems, whichever system they follow, to avoid d disappointment in the later stage.

Buying and stacking all books in the world would not make you a good swimmer unless you decide to get inside the water. Similarly, no amount of advices and ministrations would work unless we make our mind to take the cue from the past and tread carefully into the future.

Imagine that you are out at sea and steaming ahead at full speed. Life is good and you are enjoying the high life. Unfortunately your boat runs into the storm of the century. This is a storm that not even your luxury cruiser makes it through. Wave after wave crashes upon you and you are sinking and fast.

The very unfortunate thing is that most of us who are invested in the stock market today don’t need much of an imagination to understand what this situation is like. The past year has been a category five hurricane for the average investor. The storms have been swirling all around and with these storms have come an almost unprecedented destruction of wealth. This came after a very frothy period for the markets with record stock market returns and so most investors had become very complacent with their portfolios. Unfortunately this is a hard way to learn that diversifying also means picking up some alternative investments.

As an investor looking for calm in the rough waters you need to move beyond stocks. A Forex trading system or commodity futures trading, along with a whole host of other investments such as exchange-traded funds that benefit from a declining market, should be added to your portfolio. Doing this will provide you with dry land and shelter in the midst of the agony and financial destruction that is all around you these days.

Following significant falls in the value of the Japanese Yen over recent days, the general sentiment on the FOREX market is of further falls. The Yen, once considered one of the safest currencies, is now in a precarious and perilous state.

The Japanese economy is at its lowest state for decades, even lower than that of most other major economies, with its GDP shrinking by 12.7% and its currency no longer appears to be bucking the trend of world stock markets. On the contrary, it now seems to be getting back in phase. No one is buying Japanese products and Japanese manufacturing operations in foreign countries, particularly in the automotive sector, are seeing a steep decline with significant lay-offs and closures. The downturn in exports is almost 50% with further declines being predicted.

FOREX trading of the Yen against the USD has seen a rapidly increasing number of short positions with a minority remaining long. Poor sentiments are probably exacerbated by concerns that the Japanese government is looking increasingly likely to devalue the Yen despite denials that it is overvalued. Furthermore, the country appears to be preparing to use substantial funds in its currency reserves to prop up its major industries.

Forex trading is a very interesting and lucrative business. It consists of trading currency such as US dollars, Pounds, Euro and so on. People start forex business with out having proper knowledge about it, which could make them fail miserably.

People, usuall after losing money, finally look for some online training courses. There are many such courses out there on Internet. There are also software programs available that analyze market movements and provide trading signals to follow. Forex Maestro is one of these.

This course can help you a lot if you are really serious on investing your hard earned money on forex trading. This is especially very useful for those who are new investors in forex trade. You would have regular classes. You should also read the books and watch the videos given during the course.

It is easy to learn forex trading. The risk involved is less if you learn a few tricks of the trade. The reward that you might get is very high in forex trade. You can use forex scalping method to earn quickly .You can earn almost daily though the return on investment would be about 5% only. But this 5% earnings is per day and so it is indeed a very good rate of return on your investment.

In short I would say that Forex training courses and software tools have made many people reach their goals in the past. It could also help you to earn ‘the big bucks.’

When most Americans think of investing two things come to mind; stocks and bonds. Given the popularity of these markets and given the fact that they are in the news everyday means that it is hard to miss these two areas even if you don’t invest yourself. In addition, even those that don’t actively trade typically have a 401(k) account or some mutual funds and these are made up of stocks and bonds in the typical case. Just focusing on these two areas of investment though means that the average American misses the truly diverse range of investment vehicles. Although more complicated than stocks and bonds, investing a portion of ones portfolio via these alternative vehicles allows for additional diversification.

The alternative investments include forex trading, commodity futures trading, and much more. Forex trading insulates one from any steep decline in a given currency. By investing in currencies of other countries you are somewhat insulated from the decline in the US dollars. When used as part of an aggressive trading strategy you even have the opportunity to make some significant profits from the fluctuation in currencies. There is of course risk involved and you should have some very good advice when proceeding with such a strategy. Working with a commodity brokerage allows you to invest in the future value of a wide range of products such as corn, oil, gold, etc. and thus provides for an additional avenue for diversification. Such strategies are complex though and so you should have advice prior to proceeding.

Gold may have reached its limit as an alternative investment. The precious commodity reached the four figure mark this month, setting a new high. However, for all the fear of stocks and bonds that are driving investors into managed futures, there are still limits on how much investors can invest in gold. This has resulted in a pull back in gold prices, though it is still hovering at $1000 an ounce. For comparison, it was $840 an ounce a year ago.

After all, investors have already seen an Internet Bubble, Housing Bubble and now a Credit Bubble within the last decade. Thus the rush to precious metal commodities as an alternative investment has now slowed as buyers have evaluated trading system rankings and sought to avoid a new bubble. Thus gold dropped about 1% in the past two weeks, though it is still up 7% for the year.

This sanity check and correction is not limited to gold, which recently hit an 11 month high. Silver prices, too, have dropped some. Silver prices ran up 28% in the past year, and have now dropped 4% in the past two weeks.

Precious metals may have stabilized for the time being. However, they may spike again if federal and international banking actions continue to cause investor worries. Precious metal alternative investments will also see renewed activity if there are signs of inflation caused by the recent trillion dollar bailout.

The madness will never end when it comes to money. This fiat currency turned god is now hitting people where it hurts; right in the pocket book. We now live in a world where anybody will do anything to get a hold of the green. Ponzi schemes are on the rise since the economy took a turn for the worst over the housing crisis. Everywhere you hear people saying that now is the time to invest in commodity futures and in the stock market. I say stay away from it and let it crash. The further down that it spirals, the more investors are going to be taken advantage of. As the saying goes, “Buyer Beware”.

Remember, there are no guarantees when it comes to the stock market. It is primarily driven by emotion, and logic and ‘value’ often take a back seat to speculation – or panic on the downside. Either way, it’s not much better than any other legalized form of gambling.

There are alternative investments that are much better than investing in the stock market, such as managed futures. However, one of the best, overlooked ones is investing in your community or in yourself. Who needs the stock market and all it’s drama when you can be spending your money on a worth while project and know where it’s going and what it’s being used for. No matter which one you choose to invest in, you will see your return ten fold. Say no to the Ponzi schemes and say hello to real investments and not wasting money trying to bail out an already failing currency and stock market. Besides, the government is taking money out of your pocket to save all these bankers. Your cut should be invested in where you can see it and where it makes the most difference.

Trading of steel futures gets authorization in Shanghai, China

Foreign Alternative Investments: According to the China Securities Regulatory Commission, China’s largest commodity-futures, the Shanghai Future Exchange has been valued as the stock exchange and has succeeded in achieving the approval for contracts of steel trade. The contract details or any date for starting the trade is not yet published but the future enlistment of the future of steel reinforcement bars and wires rods have been approved so far.

China has faced a record of six years low in price of steel in November, which has come down up to 52 percent since June. China is considered as the largest consumer of Steel and the trade had reached up to 87 percent last year with the increase in demand of raw materials and price instability affected the buyers.

Today, Shanghai steel futures is supposed to be in a position to evaluate with that of London Metal Exchange. The crude steel production of China was comparatively high than that of North America, South America, European Union and Russia even after the worldwide recession. China alone contributed up to 38 percent of the global output, as per the World Steel Association in Brussels.

However almost half of the steel production in China is used in buildings and the government is planning to expend $585 to maintain the economy of the country. Baosteel Group Corp., which is the largest steelmaker of China, has increased the prices on some of its products. The head of the steel futures business is of the opinion that the trading of steel futures is likely to reach up to double of the present volume.

Forex Market slowdown and its strategic change

The forex market trading was very weak on yesterday as the various unexpected bailouts in US hurt a lot of markets which is merely unexpected. It is very difficult to find out the reasons for the sharp fall of yesterdays market. The strategic planning is also very hard. Forex market conditions unexpectedly shift as there is huge range of reasons. strategic preferences used in trading systems may help forex market to go up in short term. The main reason for the slowdown is the bailout package are given mostly in dollars, euro, yen and in this case their signal is completely changed.

Their strategic plan is very effective and in many cases it have helped a lot to comeback and also made it survive in very hard conditions . But sometimes they also had a hard times as yesterday as it lost its balance. The main reason for the volatility is the bailout package. Now forex brokers and investors feel that range strategies are better than the momentum strategies as it involves only small risk. They are now keenly watching the range trading and they are feeling they can really comeback by studying their range trading strategies. They had very good ideas and they had the confidence that they can come back easily and they has the confidence of making profit in short term.

The Future lies in Green Energy Spending

States which had set aside land to attract the auto industry are now going in to utilizing that land for alternative investments in green projects to find alternate energy resources. Be it solar power or wind power, the future lies in these fields as the limited fuel resources are soon going to run out. Large sums of money are being set aside to attract companies in these fields. Some states are even willing to train manpower in alternative energy fields to attract companies to set up shop in their states.

President Barack Obama’s goal of doubling the use of renewable energy is not difficult to achieve as most states had already taken steps in this direction long before. With the fillip provided by the central funding, it is likely to get a boost. With many automotive jobs having been lost in the past, states are looking to attract industries to set up shop in the fields of alternative energy. Besides being good for the atmosphere, these forms of energy will provide cheaper and longer lasting energy resources once established.

Companies look for trained manpower and infrastructure to move raw material to the site before setting up their unit. If states make these available besides giving tax incentives, it becomes attractive to companies to move in. States are willing to spend on training manpower to attract companies. Our managed futures lie in green energy so any amount of spend in this field will only yield dividends I the long run. Those states which take a lead will benefit the most.

Alternative investments
Even though the stock market is doing poorly right now, and even though most people had their portfolios destroyed recently, there remains a small group of investors who have done well, or at least not lost much money, in recent times. These are the people who used alternative investments. For example, many people are taking the current horribly low property prices as an opportunity akin to a two-for-one sale, rather than a horrible hit to their portfolios. Many people are snapping up these properties, trying to collect as much money as possible when the property prices finally increase. Art, wine, and precious metals also are fairly steady right now. There are even many funds for this sort of thing, that invest in precious art over a long term period in order to collect a gain when this artwork can be sold to museums. Art has always been considered an excellent way to diversity a portfolio as a hedge against a falling stock market. For example, Canadian art has increased fifteen percent a year for the last several years, even during the recession, and gold has increased even better, doubling in the last two years. Alternative investments can be excellent, even if they go against the mainstream.

Court issues $40M judgment against Al Parish over commodity futures trading

A judgment against former economist Al Parish, already jailed for more than 24 years for investment fraud, has been obtained by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, requiring him to pay $40 million and barring him from engaging in any commodity activity – ever again. The federal agency for regulating commodity futures stated that Parish “lied to customers and misappropriated millions of dollars in customer funds.” The U.S. District Court issued an order on 2nd February, stating that Parish and Parish Economics have fraudulently solicited about $40 million in investment for a commodity futures pool between 1986 and March 2007. Parish will be subjected to criminal judgment restitution obligation, in connection to an award of restitution and civil monetary penalties, in excess of $40 million. The commission issued in it’s statement that “Parish and Parish Economics misrepresented to pool participants that funds would be invested in commodity futures when, in reality, Parish misappropriated the vast majority of funds for his personal use”. Parish and Parish Economics also failed to provide required pool disclosure documents and provided false futures account statements to pool participants. He was sentenced to prison in June, and pleaded guilty to three counts of investment fraud.

Gold advanced today trading between $890.20 to $919.60 per oz amidst continuing worries about the global economy. Current spot price at the time of this writing has the bid at $915.30. Some are speculating the gold could see higher valuations. The U.S Commodities Futures Trading Commision has data showing more long positions than short positions for gold.

A rapid rise in gold prices could very well be in the offing for another reason. February is a Comex delivery month. This could be quite significant as many believe that the Comex price of gold is fraudulently fixed and should enough people take deliveries, the Comex Exchange may default on supplying deliveries. Should a default occur, those who are in the know about managed futures hint that the price of gold may skyrocket to new highs.

Another impetus for a rise in gold is the stimulus and bailouts we’ve had so far. With the recently passage of the $838 billion simulus bill, the United States has affirmed its commitment to spend its way out of this economic crisis. The increase in government debt in this unfolding crisis as ballooned to trillions of dollars. Should foreign governments decide to stop buying our debt, we could see a loss of confidence in the US dollar. Gold could be seen as a safe haven under such developments.

Many signs point to a long term rise in gold. Despite all these signs, we may also see a short-term decline in gold prices. The recent rise may have alternative investment management looking to take some profits.

In order to work with the millions of pieces of information our brains are bombarded with every day, people subdivide and categorize data. There is no such thing as a ‘general’ band; it is either a jazz band, a string quartet, or one of the many kinds of rock such as ‘oldies,’ hard rock, a pop cover band, and so on. The same thing is true with stock mutual funds. Every fund is labeled based on its focus: it’s an emerging markets fund, a technology fund, a small cap fund, large cap fund, etc.

<p">Although some people try to avoid categorizing, Attain Capital attempts to categorize different CTA programs by various styles of trading, and highlights a specific, promising futures trading system every so often in their Strategy Focus newsletters. For their publication, they have invented their own category named Systematic Multi-Market Commodity Traders / Managed Futures Programs.

It’s a mouthful, and don’t feel bad if you’re not clear what it means. As with other crossover categories such as ‘country rock’ or a highly-diversified mutual fund, you may not always find a perfect, existing category to place a new entity into.

Trend Followers – On the Way Out?

Most of the managed futures programs discussed here were once popularly known as trend followers. However, this categorization does not fit them aptly because the strategies have changed and expanded whereas they now move contrary to trends, trade within very short time periods, and so on.

For these reasons the category called ‘trend follower’ is slowly going extinct, even though a recent Wall Street Journal news story specifically referred to ‘Trend Following Funds,’ which could refresh the vitality of the name for a while longer.

The names that were dropped in the WSJ article are well-known staples within the managed futures community, including Campbell & Co, John W. Henry, and Winton Capital; names that manage billions and billions utilizing strategies that can – in general at least – be call ‘trend following.’

Basically, the ‘trend follower’ strategy brackets the market with a technique such as moving averages that include 90% of the price action within the market. Then, the strategy calls for a long trade after the prices of the market go up above the upper limit – which signals a fresh trend upwards - and to execute a short trade (that is, place a wager that prices will fall) after the prices of the market prices descend down through the low limit – which indicates a fresh trend downward. ‘Trend following’ strategies usually remain in the transaction until market prices stabilize to something like the 100-day moving average.

Historically speaking, these strategies have been an effective way determine trades in the markets, and have driven many successful anecdotes within the futures trading industry – e.g. the Turtle Traders or John Henry. The disadvantage to trend following – and the reason that many larger companies do not like to follow the strictly defined strategy – is that ‘trend following’ often reacts too slowly in detecting profitable trends, or getting out of the trades before significant profits are eaten up. The tactic of reacting after-the-fact has caused drastic downturns as the trend follower strategy waits too long past optimal profitability in order to end a trade.

Analyzing five years’ worth of actual trades of well-known strategists such as Dunn Capital or John W. Henry demonstrates that trend followers had rough times for most of 2004 through 2006. Why would this occur when the prices of commodities were in a clear and definite ‘trend’ over that timeframe? One reason is that the overall ‘trend’ was not constant and smooth; they experienced sharp fluctuations throughout the period. For example, crude oil experienced several jags of approximately 50% on the way up to memorable, record high prices.

Can we blame the hedge funds for ‘profit taking,’ which would otherwise have kept the trend line above the moving average?

No matter what the complicated set of factors were, it definitely negatively affected the ‘trend following’ strategists. Since the major players were hurting – or at least not profiting as much as had been anticipated – the quantity of CTAs subscribing to the trend-follower strategies shrank, and more and more investors moved over to alternative strategies – such as options trading – which were performing much better during that period.

However, rather than giving up on the trend following techniques, many managers evolved and adapted. By shortening the trading timeframe, they applied the strategies to periods as short as a few days in duration. They added filters to their analyses to eliminate losing trades during periods of low volatility. Traders also moved into new, sometimes more exotic, commodities, such as Japanese rubber or Malaysian palm oil. Mostly though, they simply became more patient and analytical, and waited for the desired levels of volatility to come back.

Leverage is a major component of any forex trading broker and is one of the main reasons why so many people are drawn to forex trading in the first place. Leverage basically allows you to trade positions far in excess of your initial trading capital which means you can potentially make vast profits from forex trading.

However it should be pointed out that leverage works both ways. Whilst you can earn a lot of money very quickly by making winning trades, you can also lose money very quickly by using leverage. This is not uncommon either. There are lots of forex traders who have blown their account completely just through one single losing position, and all because they over-leveraged themselves.

Let me explain in more detail how leverage actually works when trading forex and why it is potentially so dangerous.

If you visit the website of any forex broker you will usually be presented with appealing offers such as ‘trade forex with 1:200 leverage’ or ‘open an account with us and enjoy 1:400 leverage’. These offers are designed to appeal to forex newbies who are drawn to brokers who offer high leverage rates because it means they can trade large positions whilst only risking a small amount of capital. In these examples 200 and 400 times their trading capital respectively. In other words $1000 can be used to trade a position worth $200,000 or $400,000.

Of course ultimately it’s the forex brokers themselves that benefit from such leverage because they know that the majority of forex traders will end up losing money, and by enabling their traders to overcommit themselves it means they make more profits in the long run. Plus even if they do not overcommit themselves they know that even a small move can result in large losses for highly leveraged traders.

So as a forex trader, you should be wary of signing up to brokers who offer high levels of leverage. It usually ends up benefiting them more than it benefits you. Your major concern should be finding a top quality reputable company that is reliable even during busy periods of the day, offers tight spreads, and is fully licensed and regulated by the relevant authorities. Leverage should not really be an issue at all.

Your aim is to make money so to do this you should use strict money management rules. This means employing a tight stop loss and only risking a very small percentage, ie 2 or 3%, of your trading capital on any one trade. This will mean that any losses you may incur are kept small in relation to your total bankroll which means you can stay in the game and live to fight another day.

The thing to remember is that you can still make substantial profits from forex trading without over-leveraging yourself. High leveraged positions should be reserved for gamblers and we all know that gamblers using end up losing money in the long run.

With the stock market experiencing ever increasing volatility these days, investors are constantly on the lookout for newer, safer opportunities or alternative investments to grow their assets without much risk. We all know that a truly diversified portfolio is key in managing the growth vs. risk equation. But how does one truly obtain diversity when stocks are down, real estate is plummeting, and bonds aren’t providing enough growth. Enter alternative investment strategies, like managed futures.

A few minutes of searching the Internet will provide you with copious amounts of information on the benefits of investing in managed futures. However, there are a few key benefits that make managed futures an ideal investment in today’s particularly volatile economy…

Low correlation to stock and bond markets.
Even trading in stock futures contracts doesn’t involve the actual purchase of stock in the same way a commodity futures contract doesn’t lead to the actual purchase of the goods. Contracts are based on the value of the stock at a certain settlement date and most are sold before that settlement date is reached.

Potential for increased portfolio returns.
Year-to-date numbers show futures yielding positive returns for investors where as the current stock market is producing losses.

True portfolio diversification.
The typical investor feels their portfolio is diverse only by including different types of company stock. True diversification leads to investments that include stocks, bonds, real estate, managed futures and other alternative investments.

Opportunity to easily invest in foreign markets.
Currently, managed futures accounts are included in more than 150 worldwide markets.

Futures Investing Also Carries Risk

Trading in futures contracts – as with any other type of investment – carries risk. Any transaction can result in a loss of not just the initial investment, but even more. Mismanaged futures contracts are also in danger of actually reaching a settlement date. At which time, the buyer may actually be on the hook to purchase the contracted commodities.

Also as with any type of investment, proper management of futures contracts is vital to reducing risk. Careful consideration must be made when choosing not only how your investments should be managed but also by whom. Once you’ve decided to invest in the futures market, consider the following when choosing your CTA:

Minimum Account Size: In the past, futures trading was only available to those wishing to invest larger sums of money. Times are changing and minimum account balances are shrinking. Finding an account that will fit your budget is key.

Disclosure Documentation: Always request disclosure documentation and review it thoroughly. You’ll want to find a CTA whose trading philosophy will align with your objectives.

Historical Performance: Pay attention to your potential and current CTA’s track record. While governing bodies certify all CTA’s, some outperform others.

No Guarantees: It is always important to remember that there are no guarantees in futures trading. A CTA’s past performance can be an indicator of future performance, but this is not assured. Continued monitoring of the performance of your account and your CTA will ensure a successful financial relationship.

Managed Futures Explained

Managed futures are “alternative investments” that function similar to mutual funds, except that instead of a group of stocks, it is a group of futures contracts, government securities, and/or options on futures contracts that are managed in a single account. A managed futures account can also include commodity pools or commodity funds. These accounts are managed by profession traders known as Commodity Trading Advisors or CTAs who are regulated in the US by two separate entities: The Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the National Futures Association. CTAs manage your futures account by going either long or short on futures contracts of all kinds, including commodities like grain, metals, fuel; financial instruments like government bonds and foreign currencies; or even various indexes themselves, like the S & P 500. Fees are paid to your CTA either on a per-trade basis or as a percentage of the profits earned on the account.

What are Futures Contracts?

Much as the name suggests, a futures contract is a standardized contract to buy or sell futures at a specific date in the future for a specific price. Typically futures contracts are arranged for the sale or purchase of either commodities (tangible goods) or financial instruments (cash settlements). Note that the vast majority of commodity-based futures contracts actually result in the purchase of goods. Rather these contracts are traded on futures exchange markets in a manner similar to that of stocks. In other words, purchasing a futures contract for wheat will not actually result in the delivery of 5,000 bushels of wheat showing up on your doorstep – unless your contracts are not properly managed and the settlement date is reached before the contract is sold.

Commodities futures contracts involve tangible goods that are not subject to market-driving pricing fluctuations. Examples of commodities include oil, grains, metals, livestock, and other agricultural goods. While different farmers grow slightly different crops of wheat and different countries drill oil that may vary slightly from others, generally speaking products like these generally do not vary from producer to producer. Stereo systems, on the other hand, are not commodities because one manufacture’s product can be dramatically better or worse than another manufacturer’s. The available market determines the price of a stereo.

Futures contracts that are based on financial instruments generally fall into one of three categories: interest rate or credit instruments; stocks or stock indexes; or foreign currencies (also called fx or forex). Interest rate or credit financial futures contracts involve the fluctuation of specific types of interest rates – as in a US 30-year treasury bond, or the federal funds rate (the interest rate at which banks lend money to other banks). Stock or stock index futures contracts are based on the fluctuating price of individual stocks or the level of entire indices of stocks. For example, in the US, you can purchase futures contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average or the S & P 500. Forex futures contracts sold in the US are based on the strength or weakness of a foreign country’s currency in relation to that of the United States.
